Purifier fans and heaters

A purifier fan filters the air and then uses the airflow to cool you with a breeze, and the heater versions warm the room as well. You pay for the extra jobs: few of them publish a clean air delivery rate, heating uses far more power than purifying, and their combined filters are dearer to replace.

Before you buy

  • Look for a cleaning figure. Many purifier fans publish no CADR, only results from the maker’s own room test. Where it is missing, don’t lean on room-size claims alone. Our guide to what size air purifier you need explains CADR.
  • Count the heater separately. Heat mode draws kilowatts (2,200 W on the Philips AMF870), so it dominates the running cost whenever it is on. See what an air purifier costs to run.
  • A fan cools you, not the room. The airflow feels cooler on your skin but doesn’t lower the room temperature the way air conditioning does.

We compared published specs, including whether a clean air delivery rate is published at all, heater power and filter intervals, checked prices at UK retailers and read owner reviews where we could. We don’t lab-test these machines. How we choose.

Purifier fans and heaters questions

Will a purifier fan cool my room?

It makes a breeze that feels cooler, but it doesn’t lower the room temperature as an air conditioner does. Dyson’s diffused mode sends the air out of the back, so it purifies without blowing at you.

Why is there no CADR for this model?

Some makers, Dyson among them, publish results from their own whole-room test rather than a CADR. We show the CADR as not published rather than estimate one.

How much more does heat mode cost to run?

Multiply the heater power by the hours it runs and your tariff. Heaters draw kilowatts (the Philips AMF870’s is rated at 2,200 W), so an hour of heating costs far more than a night of purifying on a low setting.

How often does the filter need changing?

It depends on the model and daily use; each product page gives the maker’s interval and the filter’s part number. The filter-life countdown is in the display or app.

Only need clean air? Plain air purifiers publish a CADR more often and cost less to run. For damp or dry rooms, compare purifier dehumidifiers and humidifiers.
