Our verdict

The Arete Two 20L is the connected version of the Arete One 20L. It keeps the same rating, 20 litres a day at 30°C and 80% RH, 12 litres at 27°C and 60% RH and 8.5 litres at 20°C and 60% RH, plus the 4.8-litre tank and the filters. What changes is the fan: a three-speed DC motor moving 150, 175 or 255 m³/h, against 160 m³/h at most on the Arete One. Meaco also adds Wi-Fi, an LCD display and a louvre you can angle at drying laundry.

The extra airflow makes it the better purifier of the two, but Meaco still publishes no CADR and lists no air-quality sensor, so it can’t be ranked against stand-alone purifiers. Its filter carries the Arete One’s caveat: Meaco calls it H13 while quoting 99.75% at 0.3 microns, below the 99.95% its own help centre gives for that class. Noise rises from 38 dB on low to 50 dB on high.

Choose it over the Arete One if you will use the app, voice control or the timer. For what either can do about damp, see our guide to air purifiers and dehumidifiers for mould.

Filters and running costs

The HEPA filter is the same three-pack as the Arete One 20L’s, changed when it turns grey, roughly every three months. Taking it out makes the unit 4 to 5 dB quieter but stops the filtering. Clean the dust filter at least every two weeks, as Meaco says skipping it could invalidate the five-year registered warranty. Rated power is 230 W, so eight hours of drying uses at most about 1.8 kWh.

Living with it

Of the 19 owner reviews we read, all on Meaco’s UK and Irish stores, five praise how much water it pulls from damp rooms and three how fast laundry mode dries clothes. Four like the app, which can send a tank-full alert; one found it basic and its automation option impossible to set up. One owner found its humidity readings 10 to 15 points below an Arete One and two meters in the same room and returned it. Another found night mode no quieter and the tank prone to spill when poured.

Meaco MeacoDry Arete Two 20L Dehumidifier and Air Purifier questions

How do I connect the Meaco Arete Two to the Meaco app?

Install the Meaco app, then hold the Smart Laundry button on the unit for two seconds to put it into Wi-Fi mode. In the app, tap the plus button, choose Add device and add the dehumidifier when it appears. Once it’s connected you can change the mode, humidity target and timer from your phone, and Meaco says Alexa and Google Assistant control works as well.

What is the difference between the Arete One and Arete Two 20L?

The Arete Two adds a three-speed DC fan with up to about 60% more airflow, Wi-Fi with app, Alexa and Google control, an LCD display and a louvre to aim the air. Both are rated at 20 litres a day at 30°C and 80% RH, share the 4.8-litre tank and the same HEPA and charcoal filters, and carry the same five-year registered warranty.

What do the error codes on the Arete Two mean?

E1, E2 or L2 on the display mean you should contact Meaco. L3 means the room is too warm, so keep it at 40°C or below, and L4 means it is too cold, so keep it at 5°C or above. The dehumidifying light going out on its own isn’t a fault: Meaco says it happens while the unit checks the humidity and while it defrosts its coils.

Does the Arete Two need a drain hose?

Only for continuous drainage, and none is supplied. The adaptor in the tank lid takes a standard garden hose with a 12.5 mm internal diameter, which has to run downhill. To drain upwards to a sink or window, Meaco’s Arete pump fits the Arete Two 20L; it sits in the tank, is powered by the dehumidifier and includes 3 m of 9 mm hose.

How often does the Arete Two HEPA filter need changing?

When it turns from white to grey, roughly every three months, Meaco says. It is the same three-pack as the Arete One 20L and 25L, MeacoDryArete20L/25LHepaFilter. With the filter fitted the unit filters in every mode; without it the unit runs 4 to 5 dB quieter but only dehumidifies. Clean the dust filter in front of it at least every two weeks.
