A quiet, mid-priced Philips with a 420 m³/h CADR and a filter Philips rates for three years, which keeps running costs down.
Updated
- 420 m³/h Clean air delivery rate (CADR)
- 109 m² Recommended room size
- 13 dB(A) Noise at lowest setting
- 36 months Filter life (maker's estimate)
Pros
- 420 m³/h CADR (GB/T 18801-2022), enough for most living rooms
- Philips rates its FY2200 filter for about three years
- 13 dB on its lowest setting (at 1.5 m), the lowest figure we list
- PM2.5 sensor, auto mode and Air+ app with schedules
- Light sensor dims the panel, and one button turns all lights off
Cons
- Stops running if the filter alert is ignored, until a new filter is reset
- Particle sensor needs a clean with a cotton swab every two months
- Philips gives the NanoProtect filter no HEPA class (H13 or H14)
- Air+ app needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; 5 GHz networks aren't supported
- Best for
- Living rooms and larger bedrooms where low noise and infrequent filter changes matter most.
- Not for
- Very large open-plan spaces, where the PureProtect 3200 moves more air.
Our verdict
The PureProtect Quiet 2200 (AC2220/10) is the Philips most households should look at first. Philips states a 420 m³/h CADR, tested to GB/T 18801-2022, which on our five-air-changes rule suits a room of about 35 m². Philips’ own 109 m² figure is worked out to the NRCC-54013 method and assumes far fewer air changes.
Its two strengths are noise and filter life. Philips quotes 13 dB on the lowest setting, measured as sound pressure at 1.5 m: the lowest figure of any purifier we list, though makers don’t all measure the same way. And it rates the FY2200 filter, which combines a pre-filter, a NanoProtect HEPA layer and activated carbon, for about three years. The other Philips and Blueair models we list need a new main filter every six to twelve months.
Day to day it runs on a PM2.5 sensor in auto mode, with sleep mode, schedules in the Air+ app and a light sensor that dims the panel in the dark. If you are choosing between it and Levoit’s best-known app purifier, read Levoit Core 300S vs Philips AC2220.
Filters and running costs
The FY2200/30 fits the AC2210, AC2220 and AC2221. Three years is Philips’ calculated average, so dirtier air and longer running bring the change forward; the replacement alert turns red when it is due. In between, vacuum the filter surface when the cleaning alert shows and swab the particle sensor every two months. Ignore the replacement alert and the purifier stops until a new filter is fitted and the counter reset. At its 28 W maximum, eight hours uses about 0.22 kWh; Philips gives no figure for Sleep. Philips PureProtect Quiet 2200 Series (AC2220/10) questions
How long does the filter last in the Philips AC2220?
About three years, by Philips’ calculated average for the FY2200/30 filter. Dirtier air and longer running shorten that, and the replacement alert lights red when a new filter is due. The FY2200 is one filter with a pre-filter, a HEPA NanoProtect layer and activated carbon, and it also fits the AC2210 and AC2221.
How do I reset the filter alerts on the Philips AC2220?
Press the two filter-reset buttons together for 3 seconds, or reset it in the Air+ app. Do that after vacuuming the filter when the cleaning alert shows. After an early filter change, unplug the purifier, plug it back in and, within 15 seconds of switching on, hold the two filter-reset buttons for 3 seconds.
Why has my Philips AC2220 stopped running?
Usually the filter protection lock. When the red replacement alert is ignored, the purifier stops until a new FY2200 filter is fitted and the counter reset. If the screen shows E1 instead, the manual lists that as a motor fault: contact Philips Consumer Care rather than trying to fix it yourself.
Does the Philips AC2220 work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
No. The Air+ app connects to the AC2220 over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and Philips says 5 GHz networks and networks with a web login page are not supported. The app is optional: auto mode and the light button work from the purifier itself, and the app adds schedules and remote control.
Where should I put the Philips AC2220?
Leave at least 20 cm of free space around it and 30 cm above, and keep the air inlet and outlet clear. Don’t cover the light sensor beneath the power button, which dims the panel at night. In very humid rooms condensation can form on the particle sensor and make the air read worse than it is.
