Philips PureProtect 3200 Series (AC3220/10)

Best for odours

Philips' strongest current UK purifier: a 520 m³/h CADR, a PM2.5 and allergen sensor and 15 dB on its sleep setting, in a 52 cm body.

Our score: 8.3 out of 10 Research-based, not lab-tested

Updated

  • 520 m³/h Clean air delivery rate (CADR)
  • 135 m² Recommended room size
  • 15 dB(A) Noise at lowest setting
  • 12 months Filter life (maker's estimate)
£249.99–£279.99

Pros

  • 520 m³/h CADR (GB/T 18801-2022), the highest of Philips' current UK purifiers
  • Philips says it beats its predecessor, the AC3033, on CADR and noise
  • 15 dB on the lowest setting; all lights can be switched off
  • Each of its two filters has a carbon layer for odours and gases
  • PM2.5 and allergen sensing, auto mode and the Air+ app

Cons

  • Uses two filters at once, so replacements come as a two-filter pack
  • Stops running if the filter alert is ignored, until new filters are reset
  • Filters last up to a year, where the AC2220's lasts about three
  • 6.2 kg, heavier to move between rooms than the smaller Philips models
Best for
Large living rooms and open-plan spaces that need a lot of clean air without much noise.
Not for
Small bedrooms, where the smaller AC0650 or Blueair 3250i costs less to buy.

Our verdict

The PureProtect 3200 (AC3220/10) is the most powerful purifier in Philips’ current UK store. Philips states a 520 m³/h CADR to GB/T 18801-2022, about 43 m² at five air changes an hour on our rule; its own 135 m² figure uses the NRCC-54013 method. Philips presents it as the successor to the AC3033, with more CADR and less noise.

For that output it stays compact at 52 cm tall and 6.2 kg. Philips quotes 15 dB on the lowest setting and 47.5 dB at the top, both as sound pressure at 1.5 m, and 36 W at most. It reads PM2.5 and allergen levels and runs itself in auto mode, with the Air+ app as an option. A light sensor dims the panel at night and one button turns every light off.

It is our pick for odours because both of its filters carry activated carbon, and it has the air for a large living room or open-plan space. See how it compares with the other large-room models in our best air purifiers in the UK.

Filters and running costs

It takes two FY3200 filters at once, each with a pre-filter, a NanoProtect HEPA layer and activated carbon. Philips sells them as one two-filter pack, rated for up to a year, which fits the AC3210, AC3220 and AC3221. Vacuum both filter surfaces when the cleaning alert shows and swab the particle sensor every two months; never use liquid on the filters. At its 36 W maximum, eight hours uses about 0.29 kWh, and Philips gives standby as under 2 W. Our filter finder lists the parts.

Philips PureProtect 3200 Series (AC3220/10) questions

Does the Philips AC3220 take one filter or two?

Two. The purifier holds two FY3200 filters at once, and the FY3200/30 pack contains both, so you replace them together. Each combines a pre-filter, a HEPA NanoProtect layer and activated carbon. The same filters fit the AC3210 and AC3221, and Philips rates a set for up to a year depending on air quality and use.

How do I reset the filter light on the Philips AC3220?

Hold the two filter-reset buttons together for 3 seconds after fitting new filters; the alert should go out. You can also reset the filter lifetime in the Air+ app. Do the same after vacuuming the filter surfaces when the cleaning alert shows. If the alert has turned red and been ignored, the purifier locks until new filters are in.

Why won't my Philips AC3220 turn on?

Check the front cover first: the purifier stops for safety when it isn’t fitted properly. Then check whether the filter lock is active, which happens when the red replacement alert has been ignored. If the screen shows E1, the manual lists a motor fault, and Philips asks you to contact its Consumer Care team.

Can I turn the lights off on the Philips AC3220 at night?

Yes. A light sensor dims or switches off the panel when the room is dark, and the light button turns every light and the panel off; press it again to bring them back. With 15 dB on its lowest setting, it can run in a large bedroom, though its output is sized more for living rooms.

What replaced the Philips AC3033 air purifier?

The PureProtect 3200 (AC3220). Philips names it as the AC3033’s successor in its UK store, with a higher CADR and lower noise. The AC3033 is now sold there only as a renewed unit, and its FY3430-family filters are still listed for existing owners; the AC3220 takes the different FY3200 filter pack.
